Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club recently met in Beith Masonic Hall and with 18 members in attendance, welcomed Mr John Hodgart, formerly principal teacher of English at Garnock Academy, and a good friend of the Jolly Beggars. He took as his subject: The Wit and Humour of Burns. In a first class presentation he highlighted interesting aspects of the life and times of the Bard and skillfully demonstrated the humour which was apparent in many of his poems, quoting from many. After answering a number of questions from the cronies, he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks from the gathered company and presented with club gifts. At the last meeting of the club when 20 members were present, the speaker was another weel kent Ayrshire Burnsian, Andy Dick of Kilmanock No. 0 Burns Club. Andy had previously addressed the club on he Covenantors and Ayrshire Mining. On this occasion he took as his subject: Burns and a’ that. In a well illustrated lecture using slides, he journeyed around Ayrshire showing the various places associated with the Bard and liberally quoted from his poems as he explained the particular Burns links. At the end of a most interesting lecture, JVP John Waite, presented the speaker with club gifts and thanked him for his contribution to a most enjoyable evening.

Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club held their 69th Annual Celebration of the life and works of Scotland’s Bard, Robert Burns, in Beith Masonic Hall on Friday January 25. The heavy snow which greeted Beith and district that day almost caused a calamity for the Barrmill Burnsians. Traffic on the A737 between Beith and Johnstone was at a standstill for several hours due to vehicles unable to overcome the challenges of the infamous ice-covered Risk Brae at Howwood. Unfortunately, the club’s catering team was among those caught in the traffic chaos. However, with the initiative and culinary skills of Norrie Brown and Donald Reid, the ovens were lit and the food, which had been delivered earlier in the day, was soon cooking under the watchful eye of Beith’s stand-in chefs! At 7.05 pm, and after 2 hours stuck in the snow-covered A737, the caterers arrived safely. However, the severity of weather resulted in 10 members being unable to venture out for the Burns Supper. However, the gathered company thoroughly enjoyed a memorable evening which began with the haggis being piped in by Gordon McKellar, resolutely carried by 3rd year haggis-carrying apprentice, Ronnie Yulle and vigorously addressed by Marshall Carmichael. After the Selkirk grace by Honorary President, Donald L Reid, a first class meal was enjoyed before a delightful evening of traditional sangs and clatter! After a formal welcome by President, David Pettigrew, the evening got off to a flying start with Burns songs from Dalry’s guitar strumming gardening guru, Archie Comrie, accompanied by the Laird o’ West Kilbride, Gordon McKellar. This was followed by SVP Iain D Shaw giving a first class rendition of the Bard’s lively epic tale of ghosts and witches, Tam o’ Shanter. The principal speech of the evening, the Toast to the Immortal Memory, was in the capable hands of Revd David Harbison, who was in top form as he interspersed a knowledgeable and humorous speech with quotations from the poems and songs of Burns. He held the audience captivated with his usual skilful and thoughtful delivery, well deserving of the resulting standing ovation. The Laird o’ Manrahead, Marshall Carmichael, entertained with a melodic Sweet Afton and this was followed by more songs from the happy duo of McKellar and Comrie. In a thoughtful speech in reply to the orator, which reflected some of the key points and messages in the toast, Iain D Shaw, thanked the principal speaker for an excellent toast and in finishing presented Revd Harbison with a gift from the club. Next to take the floor was Past President Gordon Wilson who was in great form as he sang unaccompanied a favourite of many, Westlin’ Winds. President David Pettigrew then made a presentation to his Immediate Past President. Gordon was delighted to accept of an inscribed pocket watch, marking his year as President of the Club in 2011/12. He said how proud he was to be an active member of the Jolly Beggars and to have served the club as President in the [...]

The Herald’s Donald L Reid is also Honorary President and Secretary of Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club. His recently published book (28 November 2012) entitled: The Lost Mining Villages of Doon Valley, which was supported by a Heritage Lottery Grant, totally sold out in just 5 hectic weeks. Tremendous support for the book project was provided by a variety of groups, organisations and individuals in the Dalmellington area and at the outset it was agreed that any royalties would benefit several groups in the Doon Valley as well as the Jolly Beggars. Eleven members of Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club travelled to Dalmellington last Thursday evening when they were able to present cheques arising from royalties from book sales. Dalmellington Scouts (33rd Ayrshire) received £1,500; Dalmellington Band £1,500; Bellsbank Primary School £150 and Doon Valley Family History Group £150. The Jolly Beggars also received £1,500. A further £2,200 from royalties was used to cover the overspend on the book which turned out to be one-third bigger than originally planned. In fact it is was one of the largest Ayrshire interest books of its type. A lovely tea with home baking was laid on by the welcoming Dalmellington Scouts. John Paterson, Group Scout Chair said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this cheque which will make a real difference to our Scouts. We can’t thank Donald Reid and the Barrmill Jolly Beggars enough for their kindness.” Bert Ritchie, President, Dalmellington Band said: “We are absolutely over-the-moon at receiving this fantastic amount. Our junior band won the Scottish Championships a few weeks ago. They are shortly heading to Manchester for the British finals, so the cheque is indeed timely.” David Pettigrew, President of Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club said: “2012 was a very busy year for the club when we supported a number of community events, especially in relation to the Olympic celebrations. However, Donald Reid has worked tirelessly on the book project and all at our club are delighted to be able to financially help all these recipient groups.” It is stressed that the book is no longer in print and no reprint is currently planned unless sufficient confirmed purchasers make themselves known via 01505-503801 and they will be added to a contact list.

Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club send birthday greetings to their oldest members – Andrew McCallum – who know lives in Seaford, East Sussex. Born and raised in Beith, Andrew was born at 8 Janefield Place on December 3 1922. Educated in the town’s New Street School he then moved on to Spiers School. He recalled: “Spiers was dear to me, although I was not very academically inclined.” Leaving school aged 15, like his father before him, he trained as a cabinet-maker at Stevenson and Higgins Janefield Works, located on the site of what is now Spiers Nursing Home. Andrew was called up on January 29 1942 to the 9th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, then stationed at Wick. “My first memory was of travelling by train through snowdrifts higher than the carriage roofs and of doing rifle drill in two feet of snow, our barracks a disused kipper-smoking factory! But I loved it.” Officer training followed and in January 1944 he attended his first ever Burns Supper held on a troopship, Highland Chieftain, sailing for Italy. “Although officially ‘dry’ some enterprising individual managed to produce a dram for all the officers as we celebrated the birthday of Scotland’s Bard, Robert Burns. It was to be the first of many Burns Suppers!” He soon found himself posted to Anzio beachhead, where the landing of 110,000 American and British troops had taken place on January 22 and they were bogged down. Andrew had been sent to join the 6th Gordon Highlanders in the middle of a battle. He was directed to see Lieutenant (later Major) Ted Grace of 10 Plantoon. He was 10 minutes into a briefing when Ted was shot in the thigh. He remembers that he didn’t see Ted for another 60 years and amazingly discovered that they lived near one another in Sussex. Andrew immediately took over command of the platoon in the knowledge that 300 men from the Gordon Highlanders had already been lost in the ongoing battle. He spent the next four harrowing months at Anzio and during that time he never slept anywhere but in a hole in the ground. On May 23 he was ordered to attack a German outpost. He recalled, “I was doing a reconnaissance and I got too near the German position and stood on a mine which blew my leg off. I remember thinking it was a silly way to get out of the army, but in fact I didn’t. They got me back to England and fitted an artificial leg and I was given a desk job in Sussex. This proved to be very fortunate because that was where I met my dear wife, Sylvia, who was a Land Girl. Sadly I lost her on Christmas day 2002 after many wonderful happy years together. Andrew McCallum, a resilient individual, has truly seen life at the sharp end, with futile trench warfare and almost losing his life in battle. The more chilling memories of Anzio he keeps secret. From his happy boyhood days [...]
