Lost Mining Villages

Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club were delighted to recently receive a whopping cheque for £9,600 to carryout out a book project relating to the Lost Mining Villages of Doon Valley and culminate the project with the publication of a book. The idea for this project came about when several members attending the re-dedication of the war memorial at Benwhat. Resume Activities

Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club resume activities on Monday 5th September at 7.30 pm in Beith Masonic Hall (lower lounge). The speaker is well known local, Arkley Simpson, who takes as his subject: Archery. Knowing Arkely he will no doubt get straight to the point! Tribute – William Fairnes

Friends across the town and district and throughout the Robert Burns world were saddened at the passing of a fascinating character and keen Bursian, William Fairns, who died peacefully in his 93rd year in Spiers Nursing Home on 25th July 2011. Born and raised at Barkip (The Den), Willie attended the Den School, the large family moving into Beith around 1934. At the recent AGM of Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club the following officials were elected to serve for the ensuing year.

President, Gordon Wilson; SVP David Pettigrew; JVP Iain D Shaw; IPP James R Waite; Secretary & Joint Treasurer, Donald L Reid; Joint Treasurer & Assistant Secretary, Warnock Longridge.

The Jolly Beggars resume on Monday 5th September. Copies of the syllabus for 2011/12 session will be circulated to all members in due course.

7th Open Night

Last Monday evening Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club held their 7th open night of the session in Beith Masonic Hall. President James Waite welcomed a good turnout of cronies prior to dealing with various items of club business. Model Making

Barrmill Jolly Beggars Burns Club held their most recent meeting in Beith Masonic Club when there was a good turnout of members. President James Waite introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr Jim Miller of Kilwinning, who took as his subject: Model Churches. In an interesting talk he explained that over the years his hobby of building matchstick churches had become a real passion. Book Launch

Thursday 27 January from 7-9 pm in Beith Library Everyone is cordially invited to attend when copies (softback £8.99 and hardback £14.99) will be available. This book has 31 fascinating chapters and over 180 photographs. The cover is in colour and there is also a full colour section in the book comprising mainly photos taken by the ace photographers of Beith Camera Club.
